Organized in 1938 the Shaft Volunteer Fire Department continues to provide protection to the community of Shaft and its surrounding areas. The Shaft Volunteer Fire Department serves mutual aid to many local companies and a 25 square mile area outside of the city limits. A fairly busy department, Shaft Fire Department looks to deliver a comprehensive and tactical approach to firefighting and rescue on every call. Since being established in 1938, the Shaft Fire Department has grown to its current strength of over 30 active firefighters.

The Shaft Volunteer Fire Department conducts it's Meetings on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month at 1900 hrs, With Work Nights and Drills being held on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Mondays of each month at 1830 hrs.

Firefighters from the Shaft Volunteer Fire Department and other area Western Maryland departments attended the National Fire Academy's (NFA) Maryland Weekend on January 25-27, 2013. The NFA is located in Emmittsburg, Maryland.

Shaft Celebrates 74 Years !

On Saturday October 27th, 2012 the Shaft Volunteer Fire Department celebrated their 74th Anniversary in style. President Ryan Chapman served as the Master of Ceremony and provided his President’s Annual report. Chief Scott Yates provided his Annual Report and thanked the mutual aid companies in attendance for their support. Several awards and recognition were announced during the Banquet.
